3 Anxiety Breathing Techniques You Can Try On Your Own

Have you ever felt like your chest is tightening, your breath is shallow, and you’re completely overwhelmed by a wave of anxiety? You’re not alone. Anxiety can have a profound impact on both our mental and physical state, and one of the first things it affects is our breathing. But what if you could take back control with just a few simple breaths?

How does deep breathing actually help with anxiety? Why do specific techniques work better than others? In this post, we’ll explore how breathing can be a tool in managing anxiety and teach you easy methods you can use in the moment. We’ll walk through three powerful breathing techniques to help you reclaim your breath and your peace of mind.

The 4-7-8 Anxiety Breathing Technique

One of the most popular and effective breathing techniques for managing anxiety is the 4-7-8 technique. This simple method helps regulate your breath and bring your body back into a relaxed state, making it easier to combat stress and anxiety. Here’s how it works:

  1. Inhale for 4 Seconds
Begin by breathing in slowly and deeply through your nose for a count of four. Focus on filling your lungs with air, expanding your diaphragm.
  2. Hold Your Breath for 7 Seconds
Once your lungs are full, hold your breath for a count of seven. This pause helps activate your parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and a calm mind.
  3. Exhale for 8 Seconds
Slowly exhale through your mouth for a count of eight. Make sure your exhalation is long and controlled, helping you feel more relaxed and grounded.

Why It Works

The 4-7-8 technique works by engaging your breath in a rhythmic pattern, naturally slowing your heart rate and calming your mind. By consciously regulating your breathing, you’re signaling your body that it’s time to relax and shift away from the “fight or flight” response that anxiety often triggers.

Alternate Nostril Breathing

Another effective anxiety breathing technique is Alternate Nostril Breathing (Nadi Shodhana), an ancient practice rooted in yoga. This technique alternates your breath between both nostrils, helping to balance your body’s energy, calm the mind, and reduce stress. Here’s how to practice it:

  1. Use Your Right Hand
With your right hand, gently close your right nostril with your thumb. Your middle and index fingers can rest on your forehead or be folded down into your palm.
  2. Inhale Through Your Left Nostril
Close your right nostril and inhale deeply through your left nostril for a count of 4 seconds.
  3. Close Your Left Nostril
After inhaling, use your ring finger to close your left nostril, and open your right nostril by lifting your thumb.
  4. Exhale Through Your Right Nostril
Exhale slowly and completely through your right nostril for 6-8 seconds.
  5. Inhale Through Your Right Nostril
After exhaling, inhale deeply through your right nostril for 4 seconds.

Switch and Exhale Through Your Left Nostril
Close your right nostril again with your thumb, release your left nostril, and exhale slowly through your left nostril for 6-8 seconds.

Why It Works

Alternate Nostril Breathing helps balance your body’s energy and creates a sense of calm and mindfulness. The act of closing off one nostril at a time regulates your breath, helping restore emotional equilibrium and promoting deep relaxation.

Lion’s Breath Breathing Technique

Lion’s Breath (Simhasana) is a powerful technique to release pent-up tension and anxiety. This technique involves a deep exhale and a physical release of tension in the face and body, helping to calm nervous energy. Plus, it can leave you feeling empowered and centered. Here’s how to practice it:

  1. Sit in a Comfortable Position:
Begin by sitting comfortably on the floor with your legs crossed or kneeling. Keep your spine tall and your shoulders relaxed.
  2. Inhale Deeply Through Your Nose:
Take a deep breath in through your nose, filling your lungs completely.
  3. Exhale Forcefully Through Your Mouth:
Open your mouth wide, stick out your tongue toward your chin, and make a “ha” sound—like you’re roaring like a lion. The exhale should be forceful but natural, helping release tension.
  4. Focus on Your Face:
While exhaling, focus on releasing tension in your jaw, face, and throat, letting go of any tightness or anxiety.
  5. Repeat 3-5 Times:
After each round, inhale deeply through your nose, then exhale through your mouth with the “ha” sound. Repeat for 3-5 breaths, or as long as feels comfortable.

Why It Works

Lion’s Breath helps release tension in both the body and mind. The forceful exhale helps clear pent-up stress, promoting emotional release and relaxation.
