June is Men’s Mental Health Month: Let’s Talk About It

When you think of strength, what comes to mind? For many, it’s toughness, independence, or pushing through no matter what. But during Men’s Mental Health Month, we’re reminded that real strength—authentic strength—means showing up as you are, asking for help when you need it, and supporting those around you who might be struggling silently.

At Authentic Connections Counseling Center in Castle Rock, we believe strength lies in connection. That’s why we’re proud to recognize Men’s Mental Health Month—a time to shine a light on the unique challenges men face and to encourage healthier, more open conversations about mental well-being.

Why Men’s Mental Health Deserves Attention

Statistically, men are less likely to seek help for mental health issues.  Cultural expectations, stigma, and social pressure to “man up” can create barriers that keep men isolated—even when they’re struggling inside.

At our practice, we’ve heard so many brave stories from men of all ages—dads juggling career and family, young professionals wrestling with anxiety, veterans coping with trauma, and teens trying to make sense of their emotions. What connects them all is the deep human need for understanding, safety, and connection.

How You Can Support the Men in Your Life

You don’t need a psychology degree to make a difference. Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do is be present and create a safe space for someone to open up.

Here are a few ways to support the men in your life:

1. Check In On A Deeper Level

Instead of the usual “How are you?” try asking, “What’s been on your mind lately?” or “Is there anything you need right now?” Give them permission to go deeper than surface-level answers.

2. Be Ok With Silence

Not everyone processes things out loud. Let them know you’re there, even if they aren’t ready to talk. Silence can be a powerful way to show presence and patience.

3. Normalize Therapy and Emotional Health

Whether it’s sharing your own experience or simply expressing support, let them know that talking to a counselor isn’t a weakness—it’s a strength.

4. Encourage Healthy Outlets

Whether it’s exercise, time outdoors, journaling, or joining a men’s group, help them find ways to decompress and feel connected.

Tips for Men to Care for Their Own Mental Health

If you’re a man reading this: your mental health matters. You don’t need to hit a breaking point before asking for help. Here are a few starting points:

1. Give Yourself Permission to Feel

Anger, sadness, stress, fear—these aren’t weaknesses. They’re normal human emotions. Naming how you feel is the first step toward understanding it.

2. Redefine What Strength Means

True resilience is about adaptability, vulnerability, and connection—not suffering in silence.

3. Create a Routine That Supports Your Mind

Prioritize sleep, movement, connection, and moments of stillness. You don’t need to overhaul your life—just start with small habits that feel manageable.

4. Reach Out

Whether it’s a friend, family member, or professional counselor, talking about what’s going on in your life can lift the weight and open the door to healing.
