Do you feel stuck in your journey, finding it hard to look inside yourself and work on your emotions? Are you having trouble changing the way you see yourself, feeling trapped in old habits that don't help you anymore? Do you often feel like giving up, thinking that things will never change? It's normal to sometimes feel like your mind and heart are closed off, making it easier to blame others for your problems. This can slow down your growth and stop you from understanding important patterns in your life that, while tough to face, can lead to better relationships and more love. It's hard to break these habits, but with the right support, it’s possible. We can work together to find moments of grace and kindness in your life, helping you see their value even when they seem undeserved. By being kind to yourself, you can learn to be kinder to others, creating a path to growth and stronger connections

Imagine how would it feel to break free from these limiting patterns and become a more compassionate and empowered version of yourself!

My specific skill set and expertise in therapy involve active listening and a kind demeanor that fosters trust and open communication. From the very first point of contact, I deeply value patiently walking with clients through their inner anxieties, fears, and past traumas or relationship hurts. This side-by-side strategy helps build trust and enables clients to realize hope and redemption within a compassionate framework. By exploring their story, feelings, and beliefs without judgment, I offer support and guidance in a warm and safe environment that promotes comfortable engagement with uncomfortable pain.

I am experienced in applying a faith-based approach (when requested), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills, and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to address a wide range of issues. My skills allow me to educate and coach clients toward effective mindfulness and awareness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, self-control, interpersonal communication, and conflict resolution. Combining a bit of brain science with warm conversation helps clients recognize and overcome patterns of pain, trauma, and self-sabotage. This comprehensive approach enables me to alleviate stressors and pain, guiding clients toward healing and personal growth.

What does Derek love about being a therapist?

What I love most about being a therapist are those "Aha!" moments when clients suddenly gain clarity and the room fills with optimism and a renewed sense of direction. It's incredibly rewarding to witness clients catch their own cognitive traps, wishful thinking, or passive use of agency. Journeying with clients through their complex emotions and helping them uncover insights brings me great joy. Seeing them identify and challenge their core faulty beliefs, and then use newly learned coping strategies to foster healthier relationships with themselves and their world, is truly fulfilling.

How does Derek describe himself as a therapist?

I see myself as a therapist who deeply connects with and listens to my clients, genuinely interested in their stories. I strive to meet clients where they are, entering into their valleys of suffering and walking alongside them toward hope, where pain is redeemed and hope is remembered. My approach blends faith integration if requested, and soul care with emotionally-focused therapy and DBT skills. I believe that laughter and joy can lift the heart, while hope provides it with direction.

What makes Derek unique as a therapist?

Clients often tell me that what makes me unique as a therapist is my engaging body language and warm, inviting approach. They appreciate how I can join them in their moments of weakness and discouragement, helping to uplift their spirits. My sense of humor often connects with clients at just the right time, providing a lighthearted lift when needed. As an empath, I mirror the deep sadness clients may be feeling, which many say helps them feel less alone in their pain and grief.

Education and Professional Background

I bring a comprehensive educational and training background to my practice. I hold a Masters in Divinity and am National Board Certified, as well as certified by the Association of Biblical Counselors. My expertise includes proficiency in testing and diagnosing anxiety and depression, along with specialized training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and trauma. Additionally, I am trained in career counseling testing, equipping me to support clients in various aspects of their lives. This diverse skill set enables me to provide a holistic and informed approach to therapy, addressing a wide range of emotional and psychological needs.

Hobbies/Fun Facts

I love to laugh, especially at a good comedy show, and when I'm not hitting the slopes as an avid skier, you might find me woodworking, gardening, or taking peaceful nature walks. Raising a family of five keeps life lively, and I'm a big fan of independent films and movies in general. I stay engaged in my local and church communities, always looking for ways to connect and contribute. Fun fact: I was the only child in my family to repeat first grade, but also the only one to earn a Masters degree. Raised in North Texas, I met my wife at Eagle Lake Camp, spent some ministry years in New England, and now enjoy life in Colorado, building a family and caring for my parents.
