At Authentic Connections Counseling Center in Castle Rock, CO, we know that life can feel overwhelming at times. When stress, anxiety, or trauma take hold, it’s not just our thoughts that are affected—it’s our entire body. That’s why understanding the connection between your brain, body, and nervous system is so important. Two areas we focus on in therapy are neurobiology and the Polyvagal Theory, which help us understand why you feel the way you do and how we can work together to help you heal.
What is Neurobiology?
Neurobiology is the study of how our brains and nervous systems work. Think of your brain as the command center of your body. It sends signals to the rest of you, telling your body how to react to situations. For example, when you feel scared, your brain might tell your heart to beat faster or your muscles to tense up. These are normal reactions that help protect us in dangerous situations.
But sometimes, the brain can get stuck in overdrive. If you’ve experienced a lot of stress or trauma, your brain might stay in “fight, flight, or freeze” mode, even when you’re safe. This can lead to feelings of anxiety, trouble concentrating, or even physical symptoms like headaches or stomachaches. The good news? Your brain is capable of change. This is called neuroplasticity, which means the brain can create new pathways and learn healthier ways to respond. At Authentic Connections, we use therapeutic techniques to support this process and help you feel more balanced.
Understanding Polyvagal Theory
Polyvagal Theory is a way to understand how our nervous system reacts to the world around us. Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, it explains how our body responds to stress and safety. The word “polyvagal” comes from the Vagus nerve, a key part of our nervous system that runs from our brainstem to our heart, lungs, and other important organs.
The vagus nerve plays a big role in how we feel and act. Polyvagal Theory divides our nervous system’s responses into three main states:
Safe and Social (Ventral Vagal State):
When we feel calm, safe, and connected to others, our body is in this state. In this mode, we can think clearly, communicate well, and enjoy meaningful relationships.
Fight or Flight (Sympathetic State):
When we sense danger, our body shifts into fight or flight mode. This might make us feel anxious, angry, or on edge. It’s a survival response that helps us protect ourselves.
Shutdown or Freeze (Dorsal Vagal State):
If the danger feels too overwhelming, our body might shut down to protect us. This can look like feeling numb, disconnected, or hopeless.
Our nervous system is always moving between these states, depending on what’s happening around us. The goal in therapy is to help you spend more time in the safe and social state, where healing and connection can happen.
How We Use Neurobiology and Polyvagal Theory in Therapy
At Authentic Connections, we believe that understanding what’s happening in your brain and body can be empowering. When you know why you feel a certain way, it’s easier to take steps toward feeling better. Here are some ways we use these principles in therapy:
Building Awareness:
We’ll help you notice how your body reacts to stress or emotions. This might include tracking your heartbeat, breathing, or muscle tension. Learning to recognize these signals is the first step to calming your nervous system.
Practicing Regulation Skills:
Once you’re aware of how your body responds, we’ll teach you techniques to help you move out of fight, flight, or freeze mode. This could include deep breathing, grounding exercises, or mindfulness practices.
Creating Safety:
Feeling safe is key to healing. In therapy, we’ll work on building a sense of safety both within yourself and in your relationships. This might involve setting boundaries, developing self-compassion, or exploring how past experiences affect your current feelings.
Engaging Neurobiology Through EMDR:
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful therapy method that uses the brain’s natural ability to process and heal from distressing memories. By engaging both sides of the brain through guided eye movements or other bilateral stimulation, EMDR helps reduce the emotional charge of traumatic experiences. This process taps into neuroplasticity, enabling the brain to rewire itself and create healthier responses to triggers, ultimately supporting emotional balance and resilience.
Strengthening Connections:
Because we’re wired for connection, relationships play a big role in healing. We’ll explore ways to build stronger, healthier relationships that support your well-being.
